The word "University" is taken from the Latin word "universitas magistrorum et scholarium" which means community of teachers and scholars. University can be known to be an institution of higher education and research on different subjects.
The oldest known universities in India were particularly centers of education in earliest times. Additionally, most of the universities were Buddhist monasteries. University is an organization that provides both undergraduate and post graduate education and studies.
In 450 - 1193 CE, Nalanda was established, Odantapuri, in Bihar originated in 550 - 1040 CE and Somapura, served as one of the famous universities of the country from the Gupta period to the Muslim conquest. In earliest day´s universities of the Indian subcontinent were centers of higher learning, where students came from all over the world and gained knowledge on religion, politics and economics.
Medieval Universities in India were served as the institutions of higher education which were established with various subjects like arts, law, medicine, and theology. These universities evolved from much older schools and monasteries and continued to serve the society till modern times.
India started to establish universities with a variety of facilities especially for the women. Slowly India attained progress in the field of education since independence.
In India, there are both public and private universities. The large number of universities is supported by central government and state governments. There are some other universities which are run by private people like Dheeru Bhai Ambani University for Electronics.
Today, universities in India are supported by the University Grants Commission which is a body of central government that provides support to the government-recognized universities and colleges with funds. The UGC will conduct NET or National Eligibility Test for the recruitment of faculty in colleges and universities nationwide.
Indian higher education system was revaluated and various professional courses were introduced. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is a body involved in the organic planning and ordered development of the technical education system in the country. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is another body which provides recognition to universities. The NAAC is an independent body which is funded by the University Grants Commission of Government of India.
