Citing education as a sector with "immense potential" for Indo-US cooperation, a top US government official stressed the need for a "policy framework" to facilitate exchange of students between both countries.

"There is a need for a policy framework so that universities from the United States can work with Indian Universities through a joint venture," US Commerce Department Director General and Assistant Secretary to Trade Promotion Suresh Kumar said at a seminar organised by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (Tamil Nadu) unit here.

Leading a 21-member delegation, he said due to lack of a policy framework opportunities to have a joint participation with Indian Universities was limited.

"Education is a sector with immense potential for joint Indo-US ventures. This needs to be tapped in order to attract more Indian students to the US and vice-versa," he said.

"There are 1,04,897 Indian students in the US, representing 15 per cent of international students there. India is now the second leading country of origin of students in the US after China," Kumar said.

The event also saw an agreement being signed between Seidmann College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Michigan and The National Management School to facilitate exchange of students between both countries.
