National University of Singapore School of Computing, NUS Extension, and Catalyse announced the NUS Computing Camp 2011. The itinerary consists of seminars and laboratory work conducted by National University of Singapore (NUS) faculty. Also on the agenda will be experiential learning in an intellectually stimulating environment. This one week camp aims to give participants an opportunity to explore the boundaries of computing and discover their interest in the field of computing and technology.
In the programme, students will learn about the history of computing, discuss the fundamentals of computational thinking, build their own simple computer, try their hand at generating stereograms, connection lag, decision making and the role of information systems, amongst other topics.
One of the participants from NUS Computing Camp 2010, Shriya Chandrakar from Delhi Public School recounted her experience, “NUS Computing Camp was definitely a wonderful adventure to encourage students from all over the world to learn and interact with the experts from the computing arena. I got to learn about the different aspects of computer science which I barely knew it existed. This has definitely cemented my interest in IT and also has given me new options to choose for my career in the future. The university campus was excellent and I loved the university infrastructure.”
The camp will be held at the NUS campus from December 12 to 16 and is open to students in Class 10, 11 and 12. To qualify for the camp, students need 90 percent marks in Class 9 or 10. If schools follow grading system, students require an A1 in science, mathematics and computing.
The cost of the camp is 1,360 Singaporean dollars. The NUS Computing Camp fees per student are inclusive of seminars, activities, field trips, accommodation and meals during the programme. It will not cover airfare, travel insurance and personal expenses.
