Santiniketan: Moving with the times, Visva Bharati has made it mandatory for the students of Vidya Bhavan (the institute of humanities) to write their papers only in English except, of course, the language papers. So far, the students could write their papers either in English or Bengali.
The vice-chancellor of Visva Bharati, R K Ray, has instructed the principal of Vidya Bhavan to implement the change with effect from the forthcoming exams. The recommendation was made by a high level committee in its report recently.
The panel, headed by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, said in its recommendation: “Visva Bharati’s grounding in Bangla should be protected and preserved and at the same time, for instruction in its colleges and bhavans of higher instructions, English should be turned to as early as possible… The recommendation is guided... for Visva Bharati’s connectivity to the wider world of scholarship.”
The order, however, has raised some confusion as according to an ordinance, students at all levels of the university can write their exams in either English or Bengali. The principal of Vidya Bhavan, Niladri Bhusan Harichandran, has written to the heads of all departments, seeking their views on implementing English as the compulsory medium.
Harichandran said a final decision is yet to be taken. “I have written to the heads of departments seeking their views. After we have their response on the issue, we will hold a meeting and finalize the matter.” he added. (TNN).
