Testing times for Nagpur varsity students before exam

Although their semester exam is slated to start soon, students of Nagpur University (NU) are going through a harrowing time before the actual exam, all thanks to the allegedly lethargic attitude of the university staff.

Instead of preparing for the exam, students are made to run from pillar to post to fill in the examination forms and procure necessary documents at the university. Most of the students are even missing regular classes to get the exam forms and other necessary documents from the NU exam section. The exam will start from October 15.

The situation is creating long queues and students are seen running helplessly from one table to another, at the varsity that is spread over three to four kilometres. This is making students critical of the NU's functioning and have demanded various reforms, including the introduction of online system of submission. Many students have even pointed out bribes

"Even for submitting revaluation forms, it takes days. The officials are very rude and their attitude is difficult to deal with," arts student Abhijeet Bose said. He added that all the officials involved in the system were non-cooperative.

Another student Sakshi Pannalal is going through similar experiences. "One can never expect time-management from NU officials. Even a simple work like getting a syllabus takes hours. Many a times, we are told to stand in a queue only to find out that we were standing in a wrong one," she said.

She also pointed out that it is risky to submit valuable documents like PAN card or identity cards to the university in order to get necessary documents. "Even when we submit all the required documents, we are asked to come repeatedly for a number of days until we give up and decide to pay bribe demanded by them," another student Vaishnavi Babar said.

A different scene was witnessed by a student Parth Palan, where the peons were seen handling the officers' jobs. "Inconvenience because of employees comes later on. What is disgusting is that there are hardly any employees present at the office. The peons are usually seen doing not just odd jobs but also stamping forms and signing them away," he said.

When contacted, Controller of Examination at NU, Siddharth Kane expressed helplessness saying students mostly forget to submit proper documents. "This is a period when a lot of certificates are demanded so the workload has naturally increased. If need be, students can directly approach me. But they should avoid paying bribes," he added.
