HC reserves orders on Alagiri trust college's plea

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court reserved its orders on a petition by an engineering college set up by a trust in which Union Minister M K Alaigir is a member challenging rejection of affiliation to it by the Anna University of Technology.

Justice S Manikumar reserved the orders after conclusion of arguments by special Government Pleader Pugazhendi and the counsel for the trust Veera Kathiravan.

Pugazhendi defended the AUT's decision to reject affiliation to the Dhaya Engineering College, set up in nearby Sivarakottai by the M K Alagiri Educational Trust, saying it was the only institution which faced several complaints.

He submitted the trust had misrepresented to the All India Council for Technicial Education (AICTE) that they had obtained Land Conversion Certificate and had secured its approval.

The AICTE had denied approval to over 50 colleges because they did not possess the land conversion certification. "How can special concession be shown to the the Dhaya Engineering College?" the Government Pleader asked.

He argued that there was nothing wrong if the AUT sought the help of the Madurai District collector in seeking clarification regarding land conversion certificate issued to the College.

Counsel for the trust Veera Kathiravan said AUT pointed out only three deficiencies, including lack of adquate books in library and lack of transport facilities, and said these had been rectified.
