Centre sanctions 11,366 schools for UP

In a significant step, the Centre today sanctioned 10,366 new primary schools and over 1000 new upper primary schools for Uttar Pradesh after the state notified the RTE rules in July.

The schools were sanctioned by the HRD Ministry under the Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan programme, said an official. "In all, the Ministry has today sanctioned 10,366 new primary schools and 1052 new upper primary schools," the official said.

These schools have been sanctioned in accordance with the neighbourhood norms prescribed in the state under the RTE and are intended to provide access to elementary school to children residing in hitherto unserved habitations, the official said.

Uttar Pradesh was of the 15 states which had failed to notify the rules under Right to Education (RTE). The HRD Ministry is understood to have prodded these states to notify the rules for release of central funds. The new primary schools will be provided two teachers each, and in the upper primary schools, three subject teachers for Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science.

The central government has also sanctioned 121 composite schools for urban deprived children, the official said. In addition, sanctions have been accorded for providing two sets of school uniforms to 1.75 crore children belonging to disadvantaged groups and weaker sections studying in primary and upper primary classes.

The official felt that the development is expected to significantly improve the pace of universalising elementary education in Uttar Pradesh.
