The state school education department might consider giving 25 grace marks for excellence in sports only to students on the verge of failing their class X and XII board exams. TOI was the first to report on September 9 that the department recently scrapped the policy of giving 25 grace marks to all students participating in and excelling in sports at district, state and national levels.
The decision to abolish the grace marks was taken after the beneficiaries of the policy went up from 4,189 to 31,790 (in both class X and XII) in five years, and complaints of bogus claims.
Later, in a recent meeting, it was discussed that grace marks for sports will be restricted only to students who are on the brink of failing and but have excelled in sports and can pass with their help. A final decision on the matter is still pending.
An official from the department said, “Several associations are giving bogus certificates for a sum. We expect such cases to go down now. The new policy will ensure that only genuine students benefit. Junior colleges in the state already reserve 3% of total seats for students who participate in sports at different levels. There should not be any complaints.”
