The Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, will be reopened on October 3 for first and final year students, said P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor, Anna University.
The decision was taken after a meeting on Tuesday of the heads of the departments of the Institute which was indefinitely closed following sit-in protests by students.
The first year students did not participate in the protests and their academic calendar has to be on pace with other colleges. For final year students, the placement drive was on and therefore the university has decided to reopen classes for both from October 3, he said. Stating that he was willing to talk to the students who were staging the protest, he said efforts were being taken to hold talks with the student representatives, two from each department, on Wednesday.
On Monday, the students, demanding action against the Dean, had insisted that the Vice-Chancellor should talk in the presence of the media. The authorities are of the opinion that the students should talk to them first as they have decided to revoke the suspension (from hostel) of four students within a week.
