Gujarat, Karnataka, WB demand vernacular languge for NEET

Gujarat, Karnataka and West Bengal demanded allowing vernacular languages in the proposed National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test(NEET)for admission in MBBS courses while Goa objected to the syllabi finalized by Medical Council of India.

Various states met top officials of the Union Health Ministry, Medical Council of India (MCI) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) here under the chairmanship of CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi.
  
During the discussions, representatives of Gujarat, West Bengal and Karnataka sought the holding of the all-India medical entrance exam in their vernacular languages while Goa had objections to the syllabi finalised for NEET by MCI.
  
Some North-Eastern states had reservations on the eligibility criterion for the exam for admission to MBBS courses across the country, it is learnt.
  
Sources say a final call on whether NEET will be allowed in regional or vernacular languages along with the decision on whether to allow negative marking in the all-India exam will be taken by MCI within a week.
  
CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi told that "we are ready for going ahead with NEET exam from 2012. The all-India medical entrance exam will be held bi-lingually in English and Hindi, as all other national-level examinations."
  
Asked about the demand from some states for holding the exam in different vernacular languages, he said, MCI will have to take a call on it.
