Union Minister for Coal Sriprakash Jaiswal has spoken with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and written a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati asking for Central University status to the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Vishwavidyalaya (CSJM University).
"This initiative has been taken seeing the demand by the town's educationists and intellectuals for establishing a Central University in Kanpur from time to time," the MP from Kanpur said in a statement.
Jaiswal has had a discussion on the issue with Sibal so that CSJM is recognised as a Central University in the 12th Five Year Plan, the statement said.
It claimed that Sibal has agreed to consider the demand.
Jaiswal also wrote a letter yesterday informing Mayawati about the discussion, it said, adding that he has asked the UP government to send a proposal to the HRD Ministry so that the process to grant CSJM recognition as a Central University be started.
Located on a campus of 265 acres, CSJM, earlier known as Kanpur University, provides 44 courses in 500 colleges of 15 districts and is a major educational hub in the state.
