‘Shaastra', annual technical festival of IIT-Madras, will be held from September 28 to October 2 with an aim to “Inspire the Future”. Over 50 events, 7 workshops, lectures and technical exhibitions, line this year's festival which will witness the latest innovations in engineering and technology.
This year, students of IIT-M will show visitors how robots transform the way people live, with several projects that will be on display. Among those on display is the ‘Orienter for the visually challenged' - a support system for the visually challenged to navigate through obstacles. This portable device incorporates inputs from GPS, accelerometers, and the internet. ‘The Transformers Bot' project aims to mimic a Transformer robot from the movie, Transformers. The team has developed a plastic toy which can be transformed from a car to a robotic humanoid. The toy is a 10 cm model and will be scaled up to life size and will be displayed during ‘Shaastra'.
Apart from the regular events, ‘Shaastra' 2011 will showcase three hugely popular professional shows: an Air Show, an RC Car Show and ‘Shaastra' Nights. The Air Show, will take ‘Shaastra' to a whole new level this time around, with an hour of beautifully choreographed aerobatics performed by an armada of enthralling scaled down planes, helicopters with a lot of new manoeuvres planned. While Dirt Storm, the Radio Controlled (RC) Car Show, promises to be bigger than last year, with more stunts and entertainment, ‘Shaastra' Nights will present a technical art show with demonstrations of the latest breakthrough inventions by celebrities in the filed of science and engineering. This year ‘Shaastra' will put up a spectacular 3D video mapping show which essentially is 2D projection on the facade of a building that appear like 3D to the viewers.
