The American Center library held an East-West inter-college fusion dance competition on September 14. The theme was peace/wilderness/hope. About 15 teams took part, amongst which some were college groups, while the others were dance institute students from all over the city.
The dance competition was the American Center’s first attempt at its kind. The aim of this competition was to explore creativity of rhythm and movement. The entire program contained of two sessions; the first session started with the welcome dance by students of Navras Performing Arts Institution, followed by the dance competition.
The judges of the competition were Paromita Chakraborty, director of Navras Performing Arts, Prasanna Saikia, from Padatik, and Sraboni Ghosh, specialist in Bharatnatyam and Odissi disciple of Kohinoor Sen Borat. Mrs Tanushree Shankar graced the competition with her presence, as the chief guest. All the participants did a good job, by putting up performances, about what an East-West dance fusion meant to them. Every performer, according to the judges did a good job, with only one flaw in some, “There was not enough of American style in most of the performances,” said one of the judges, Prasanna Saikia.
However, most of the performances were done based on Hindi movie songs and album songs. While some performances looked well rehearsed, and some did not, all the performers had a single characteristic in them – they all were highly enthused; this high enthusiasm showed in most of the performances. The colleges, which performed, were – Women’s Christian College, Lady Brabourne, Loreto, Calcutta Girl’s, Presidency, National University of Juridical Science, Bethune, Ashutosh, St Xavier’s and Shri Shikshayatan. The dance institutes that took part were- Meghnad Saha Institute, Navras Performing Arts and Dance Dreamers, amongst which, Meghnad Saha Institute took the third place, Shri Shikshayatan took the second, while Navras Performing Arts took the first place.
The evening ended with a lot of experience and a promise that the city would experience more of these competitions, again.
