Maharashtra govt sanctions Rs 50-cr fund to Shivaji University

Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the Shivaji University in Kolhapur as part of the varsity's golden jubilee celebrations.    

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, said that a study centre in memory of the state's first Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan would be set up at the university.
   
He said the fund of Rs 50 crore would be provided in three phases and the university should keep the government informed about the initiatives being taken.
   
The university had played an important role in developing the education sector in rural areas of Western Maharashtra, he noted, speaking at a meeting organised to discuss the varsity's golden jubilee celebrations.
   
The golden jubilee celebrations will be held from November 18, 2011 to November 17, 2012.
   
Pawar suggested that new courses like Nano Science be started at the university.
   
He said the University's "Earn and Learn" concept had imbibed self-reliance in students.
   
Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam, Home Minister R R Patil, Krishna Valley Development Corporation Minister Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, Labour Minister Hasan Mushrif and Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope were present at the meeting.
