Govt reaches out to parties for ensuring passage of IIIT Bill

With the fate of hundreds of students hanging in balance, the government is reaching out to various political parties to get the bill concerning IIIT, D&M Kancheepuram passed in the last day of Monsoon session tomorrow.

The passage of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram Bill, 2011 seeks to upgrade the IIIT, Kancheepuram to an institute of national importance.

Sources said HRD Minister Kapil Sibal is reaching out to political parties for smooth passage of the Bill tomorrow.

The government today faced an embarrassment as it could not pass the Bill in Rajya Sabha after Congress MP J D Seelam demanded reservation for SC/ST and OBC students in the institute.

This prompted the BSP, RJD and LJP along with the Left parties to seek proper discussion on the Bill.

The government had brought an ordinance on June 20 to declare it an institute of national importance as Parliament was not in session. The Bill, passed by Lok Sabha on August 25, seeks to replace the ordinance.

The proposed legislation is aimed at enabling the growth of the institute by providing it more autonomy in academic and financial matters.

The institute, set up in January, 2007, has been imparting inter-disciplinary academic and research programme that integrates engineering design, manufacturing and management in IT.
