Teachers play a vital role in crafting the character of a human being, and to commemorate their immense contribution to society, Calcutta Citizen’s Initiative and TAKE 5 Communications presented TEACHER, on the occasion of teacher’s day on September 5, at Gyan Manch. This special occasion was graced by Joyeeta Das, principal, Techno India School; Jayranjan Das, psychiatrist; and Bisyajit Motilal, corporate personality. Father Kurien Emperal, director and principal, St. Lawrence School, was the chief guest for the evening. The event was moderated by, Mamta Binani, practising company secretary and former chairperson, Eastern India Regional Council of ICSI.
Teachers are the cornerstones of an intelligent and progressive society; they bear the responsibility of proper guidance. Apart from parents, they are the repository of knowledge and values for children. Teachers impart education to children and prepare them for the future. To honour this noble service, Take 5 Communications has directed and produced an English film called 'TEACHER'. The 17 minute film talks about the ill effects of corporal punishment. It shows how a good teacher can motivate a previously errant child towards being pro-active and inculcate an interest in learning. “I would like to dedicate this film to all my teachers,” said Tathagato Bhattacharya, director of the film.
The screening was followed by a panel discussion where eminent persons from different sections of the society participated, speaking on fundamental issues, such as the ill effects of corporal punishment and the importance of teachers in the society. Students Zoheb Roff and Indu Upadhyay, also participated in the discussion. “A teacher is a craftsman. Like a sculptor a teacher sculpts human beings. A good teacher will never use the butcher’s knife but a surgeon’s scalpel in his or her work,” commented Motilal.
The discussion shed light upon other crucial points such as, a stigma towards the teaching profession, and the fact that very few young people consider teaching to be a career option.
This noble initiative was supported by Yi (Young Indian Wing of CII), Globsyn Business School, Lions Club of Kolkata-Mother Teresa Sarani, Association of Corporate Advisers and Executives and Rashtriya Chetna Manch.
