MENTAID association celebrated its silver jubilee recently, with a service in St Paul’s Cathedral along with performances by the students of the organisation and a sale of products made by the students. The association started 25 years back as a small emotional support group for parents of differently-abled children, and then grew into an organisation and a school of vocational training for the children.
Victor Banerjee graced the occasion with his presence. Students of La Martiniere For Girls’ also attended the service along with members of the church. It was a morning of prayers and blessings, after which the students of the Vocational Training Centre performed for all present there.
Iona Kundu, founder of MENTAID says, “When Tarun, my son, was born different, I was bitter and angry at first, but then I realised that I love him and God loves him. A few of us parents got together to help each other out emotionally, and then a lady very generously gave us a plot where we built our first school”. The school filled up overwhelmingly fast, and soon there was a need for a larger set-up. Again, a very kind lady provided the means for us to acquire a plot in Thakurpukur to build a bigger school added Iona. Though the new school is still in the process of construction, the organisation continues to help and support parents and children.
