WB govt gives 'Siksha Ratna' to teacher for first time

West Bengal Government today awarded 'Siksha Ratna' awards for the first time to 100 teachers in the state for their contribution to education.
     
The award, with a cash component of Rs 25,000 besides a citation, a set of books and an angavastram, was presented to the teachers from all over the state at a function organised by the School Education Directorate.
     
Expressing statisfaction that the new state government had taken initiatives to improve the service condition of teachers, Governor M K Narayanan said that there was need for more fund to provide better pay, better infrastructure and teaching parapharnelia.
     
Describing Chief Minister, Mmamta Banerjee as a 'dynamic chief minister,' Narayanan said that under her leadership, the state government was determined to bring down the number of drop-outs at the primary level.
      
Lamenting that lack of discipline among students was becoming an increasing problem, he said that it was the foremost duty of the teachers to inculcate discipline among the students.
      
"I expect teachers would rise to the occasion. They must understand the necessity of each child instead of straightjacketing a group," he said.
     
While the government was doing its best to meet the requirement of the teachers, they, on their part should fulfil what the society expects of them, he said.
     
Education Minister Bratya Basu, said the government will give away the Siksha Ratna awards to 100 teachers every year.
