Orissa to open 1480 new schools under RMSA

Orissa government has decided to open 1480 new secondary schools and develop 344 High Schools as models under the Rastriya Madhyamika Shikshya Abhiyan (RMSA), official sources said.

The decision in this regard was taken at the 1st Governing Council meeting of RMSA chaired by the chief minister Naveen Patnaik. "In the first phase 709 new secondary schools will be taken up under the RMSA," chief minister Naveen Patnaik said.

Of the 709 proposed new schools in the first phase, construction of about 300 such institutions were likely to be completed by October end, the sources said.

The council approved a budget of Rs 1128.49 crore for this under the RMSA for the year 2011-12.

The schools would be located within five km radius of all habitations in order to universalise secondary education in the state. The RMSA was attaching top priority towards filling up of teachers' vacancies, they said.

Stating that the school and mass education department has engaged 20,000 teachers at the elementary level and 3467 teachers at the secondary level, the official said the process would continue till attaining the desired pupil-teacher ratio.

Regarding the model schools, the government also decided to set up such a school in each of the 314 blocks and one each at the district headquarters.

This apart, for the first time, annual school grant of Rs 50,000 and minor repair grant of Rs 25,000 have been given. The state government also launched the bicycle scheme with an outlay of Rs 75 crore, they said.
