Alagiri trust college moves HC again on denial of affiliation

An engineering college in which Union Minister M K Alagiri is a trustee has again moved Madras High Court Bench here against denial of affiliation by Anna University of Technology (AUT) for 2011-12 academic session.

Justice S Manikumar ordered issue of notice to AUT when the petition by Dhaya Engineering College, set up at Sivarakottai in the district by M K Alagiri Educational Trust, came up before him.

In his petition, college Principal M Pandi Kumar submitted that denial of affiliation was not in consonance with the court's August 10 directive to the AUT to consider the college's plea for recognition in accordance with law within 10 days.

He alleged political motives were responsible for denying affiliation to the college.

He claimed the very object of running the college was for the benefit of weaker sections and it had been defeated due to the denial of affiliation. Unless affiliation was given 'great  injustice' would be caused to the students.

The AUT had initially refused affiliation citing three deficiencies which have since been rectified.

On an earlier petition by the college, a single Judge this month directed the AUT to grant affiliation if the deficiencies had been rectified.

However, on an appeal by the AUT, a pision bench on August 9 last modified the order directing the university to consider the plea of the college within ten days.

The AUT then sent a new team of officials to the college last Friday for a comprehensive inspection without sticking to the three deficiencies pointed out earlier.

The petitioner submitted that the team raised 'irrelevant' questions about acquisition of land for the college, its location near water bodies and absence of permission to convert the wet land for use for the college.

He said the AUT was not fair in pointing out new deficiencies. The District Collector had sent a report to the university that the college should not be given affiliation without informing it. The Collector had no role in recognition or affiliation of the college, the Petitioner contended.
