The 18th Annual Conference of the Indian College of Cardiology (ICCCON 2011) was held in Kolkata for the very first time, recently. Many renowned cardiologists and cardiac surgeons attended this conference from the nation itself and from abroad including countries like the UK, USA and Australia.
The Indian College of Cardiology or the ICC was established almost a couple of decades back and since then has been consistent in providing the nation with cardiac care along with inventing methods and devices for optimum cardiac treatment. It is an academy formed of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from all over the country. The ICC has been more than just a platform for cardiac specialists to exchange views to bring about development in this sector.
Also, it has been active in bringing about a much-required change in the attitude of the commoners and has encouraged many youngsters to join them in this noble cause. Doctors for giving a clearer idea regarding the scenario included president of the ICC Dr UC Samal, the president elect Dr HN Mishra, chairman organising committee Dr Arup Das Biswas, and the organising secretary Dr Rabin Chakraborty and Dr Phillip who had come down all the way from the USA.
Dr Samal added, it is our bad dietary habits and negligence towards preventive measures that we are most prone to the severest cases of cardiac problems. The organisation has so far been involved in campaigns that educate people about the various preventive measures and also have conducted free check up services in both rural and urban areas.
Doctors unanimously agreed that Indians are “lethargic”, hence the increasing number of cardio patients in our nation. The organisation also indulges in exchange programmes that would broaden the horizon of our doctors and help them do a better job. Dr Chakraborty is convinced that this conference would bring about definite reforms in the cardio-care scenario in India and help in the better solving of cardio problems.
