Nearly 28,000 Plus-Two students to get free laptops

Nearly 28,000 Plus-Two students of 152 schools in the city will receive free laptops in the first phase of distribution this academic year.

Officials of the departments of School Education, Collegiate Education and Technical Education and from Anna University on Tuesday participated in the first meeting organised at Ripon Building to chalk out a strategy for the distribution that is set to begin on September 15.

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu has drawn up technical requirements for the laptops to be distributed. The Chennai Corporation has been asked to coordinate the distribution of free laptops and ensure prompt distribution in the city.

The beneficiaries in Chennai would include those from 32 Chennai Schools, 97 government-aided schools and 23 government schools. Plus-one students of these schools would receive laptops only in the second phase.

First and third year students of six government arts and science colleges and 14 government-aided colleges in the city would be covered in the first phase.

Distribution of laptops to second year students of the arts and science colleges in the city would be carried out in the second phase.

Second and fourth year students of three government engineering colleges in the city are eligible to receive the free laptops under the first phase of distribution.

Nearly 3,500 engineering students of the College of Engineering Guindy, AC Tech and School of Architecture and Planning would benefit from the scheme in the city in the first phase.

First and third year students of 14 polytechnics in the city have also been identified for the first phase of distribution in 2011-2012.
