To check the menace of ragging, a medical college here has appointed professors as the local guardians of freshers.
"In all, 19 professors have been given the responsibility to guard 190 students," Principal of Ganesh Shankar Medical College (GSVS) Dr Anand Swarup told.
"Every year 190 new students come to our college mostly from outside the city and reside in hostels. Though ragging is banned in our college, new students still have some fear of seniors. Just to instill confidence in them, we have taken this step," Swarup said.
Each student will have the mobile number of their group teacher and will be able to personally contact him or her during need of help, he said, adding that the new system has created a healthy atmosphere in the institution.
"Students are happy and are sharing their problems with their group teachers. This step has also lessened the burden of the hostel warden," the Principal added.
