Young scientists and experts from Manipal Advanced Research Group (MARG) and Centre for Atomic and Molecular Physics (CAMP), Manipal University, will participate in the prestigious European Union (EU)-sponsored international Marie Curie research scheme.
The joint research programme comes under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme of Research and Technological Development (FP7).
Fundamentally, a mobility grant, each group will benefit from acquiring new knowledge and techniques to take back home while working at partner institutions resulting in high research output, Convenor of MARG Dr Mohini Gupta told here.
The program will also increase the quality and quantity of PhD and MSc training in the respective partner organisations through an increased mobility of early stage researchers receiving specialised and inpidual training at all network sites, she said.
MARG which is tasked with promoting fundamental research at Manipal University will be co-ordinating the project in India, Gupta said.
The broad topic interest concerns weakly bound systems which exist in nature and come in all sizes spanning nuclear, atomic and molecular physics.
"The network of researchers addressing various aspects of this subject under the present Marie Curie scheme is comprised of beneficiaries from Norway, Sweden and France with participants from India and Argentina," she said.
Through CAMP, a well established experimental programme using lasers in biology, Raman spectroscopy and photonics, the dynamics of break-up and the imaging of atoms and molecules in laser fields will be addressed, she said.
"Such a mobility programme brings a unique complementarity of purpose to participating groups," Gupta said.
Researchers at MARG, who have been working on a better understanding of the physics of extremely heavy nuclei at the known limits of the Periodic Table, will study aspects of the atomic structure of these elements and the interface between nuclear and atomic effects "drawing on the considerable experience in many body theory that the collaboration brings," she added.
