HC gives go ahead for engineering college admissions

The Kerala High Court permitted the state government to continue with the admission process for engineering courses.

Vacating its August 19 order of status quo, a bench comprising Chief Justice J Chelemeswar and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon, directed that the batch of petitions be posted for final hearing by the first week September first week.

Earlier, Advocate General K T Dandapani submitted that the entire admission process had come to a halt due to the interim order.

About 40,000 students had submitted options and 20,000 seats were alloted. Out of which 16,877 had remitted their fees, he stated.

Petitioner Sohan Varghese of Ernakulam had submitted that for almost three decades admission to engineering colleges in the state are made on the basis of entrance exams.

But this year a new system was introduced whereby marks obtained by the candidate in the qualifying examination would also be added to entrance examination mark and admission would be given from a combined rank list so made with 50 per cent weightage for qualifying exam and 50 per cent for the entrance test.
