Announcing the winner, Hiroshi Takashina, managing director, Nikon India, said, “At Nikon, we have always been committed to promoting photography across the world and the Nikon Photo Contest International is a grand initiative in this direction. This year we are even more excited as the Grand Prix winning entry has come from India. Debarshi’s accomplishment is a testimony of tremendous potential, passion and love for photography this wonderful country holds. The natural scenic beauty of India gives photographers ample opportunity to create such great pieces of art.”
Explaining the true essence of the photograph, Duttagupta said, “This shot was taken in Varanasi. The sheer energy created by the diver was truly fascinating. This was an experience of a lifetime, for which the true feeling cannot be expressed in words, although I have captured it through my camera.”
“The winning photo captures a precious moment that conveys the story of a small fishing village through activities that have been repeated daily for generations. The key to this photo’s success is in its capturing that magically moment of beauty as evening slips into night. One might even sense a touch of sadness, as people from the world over react in similar fashion to the nostalgic pangs experienced at sunset,” said Hiromi Tsuchida, chief of judges, Nikon Photo Contest International 2010-2011.
