IGNOU begins talks for sign language training centre

Aiming to set up a sign language training centre, the IGNOU has started deliberations with various stakeholders and organisations including those for the hearing impaired.
 
Such discussions will be held every three months, the IGNOU said in a statement quoting Vice-Chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai.
 
The varsity is planning to establish the 'Indian Sign  Language Research and Training Centre', which has been fully funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for a period of five years.
 
The meetings will be held with National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and All India Federation of Deaf (AIFD) among others, he said.
 
 Representatives in the first meeting suggested that the institute's focus should be more on research activities pertaining to education for the hearing impaired students and preference should be given to them for the appointment of the staff, the statement said.
 
It also quoted Pro Vice-Chancellor P R Ramanujam as saying that Rehabilitation Council of India is also now fairly in agreement with the University on establishing the centre.
