Follow AICTE guidelines for engineering admissions: HC

Updated on: Monday, August 22, 2011

Orissa High Court made it clear that admissions for MBA, MCA and engineering courses in colleges of the state for the ongoing academic session will be made strictly as per the guidelines of AICTE.

Disposing a slew of writ petitions, a single-judge bench of Justice S C Parija made it clear that the court cannot interfere in the qualification criteria set by the AICTE.

With this high court order, the Orissa JEE, which in May had conducted entrance examinations for admissions into colleges and educational institutions for MBA, MCA and various engineering courses, may now go ahead with the admission processes.

As many as 25,000 shortlisted students, including 21,000 engineering aspirants had been waiting for the High Court verdict since last month.

The AICTE in January this year had come out with a guideline asking all its affiliated institutions to ensure that general students having less than 50 per cent marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics at Plus II level are not allowed to pursue engineering courses. For reserved category students, the eligibility criteria was 45 per cent.
