Updated on: Monday, August 22, 2011

In a first such initiative in the country, Tamil Nadu government will set up a Medical Recruitment Board, the state Assembly was informed.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr V S Vijay said this Board, which will manage appointments in the Health department, will function under the control of a High Level Committee.

Replying to a special call attention motion moved by AIADMK and Left parties on appointment of doctors and nurses in available vacancies in government hospitals, he said the Board's constitution will help in swift appointments.

The government would secure the nod of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, the nodal agency for appointment to state government departments, wherever required, he said.

"Such Board has not been created in any other state of the country. Those who would be appointed through it will be mandated to serve in that particular post for a minimum period of three years, which will ensure there are no frequent vacancies created," he said.

The decision to constitute the board was taken at the end of a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa last month, the minister said.
