Phase 2 of UK-India Education and Research initiative begins

The second phase of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) kicked-off with the signing of an MoU, enabling enhanced ties between Indian and British universities in capacity building and foster mobility of students between the two countries.

The UKIERI was started in April 2006 with the aim of enhancing educational links between India and the UK.

The MoU was signed between UGC chairman Ved Prakash and Director of British Council Rob Lynes on behalf of UK UKIERI partners in the presence of HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and British High Commissioner to India Richard Stagg.

"This MoU aims to work with UGC for implementation of strand programmes and activities in the Higher Education Institutions in India and is in continuation to the MoU signed between HRD Ministry and the Department for Business, UK which sets out the framework for UKIERI from 2011-2016," said a Government statement.

The collaboration aims at providing opportunities to teachers, faculty members, senior staff and students from universities, colleges and other educational institutions to build capacity.

It also seeks to provide opportunities for the UK and Indian universities to collaborate on thematic partnerships on mutually agreed areas.

Besides, it aims to foster mobility of students across the two countries and work towards the transferability and equivalence of qualifications through recognition of learning and achievements between the two countries.
