UGC should set up National Testing Facility

Thanjavur:Sastra Varsity has suggested that,UGC should set up a National Testing Facility to conduct entrance exams to weed out corruption.

Measures need to be taken in weeding out corruption and favouritism in admissions and avoid multiciplity of examinations.

University vice-chancellor Prof. R Sethuraman, said no progress has been made on the 'programme of action 1992' under the national policy on education 1986, envisaging conduct of an all India entrance exam for professional and techncial courses.

He said various committes over the years had recommended setting up a NTF, independent of secondary boards, to conduct the exam on the GRE/SAT pattern. Based on these marks,students could be admitted to institutions and branches of their choice, without institutions needing to conduct another test. But nothing had come of these proposals.

Referring to the letter of Joint Secretary Ashok Dogra on institutes charging high fees for courses and charges for prospectus,he said the University does not hold an entranceexam.

Admission is based on plus two marks on normalization process for 70 per cent of seats, while 30 per cent are allotted by the central counselling board, based on all Indiaengineering entrance exam, he said. .
