Youthikaa organised an intercollegiate short film competition at Gyan Manch, Kolkata recently. The event was a platform to pass across the message of peace to the youth of a nation that has been starved of peace for decades now.
The Jury members included director Mainak Bhowmik, Sreelekha Mukerjee and Satarupa Sanyal. Seven films were short listed out of the 20 that came in for the contest, and were shown at the event. All the movies were based on the theme peace, and by some means or the other projected the message. Some of the films were based directly on the theme of communal harmony; some were based on the theme of friendship and some portrayed the conflict and disharmony in the minds of the characters and thus, brought out the importance of peace.
"My three best friends" was the film that won the competition. It was a film celebrating the 'extraordinarily ordinary' lives of three college students and the simple and pure bond of friendship among four boys. Simple things of life that they loved appreciated which brought them peace of mind. Aditya Sengupta, through this film has shown that we can create “extraordinary” things from the most “ordinary” aspects of life.
“Happy New Year” was yet another well-made film by Ayushman Mitra. It brought out the complexities of relationships in domestic life and contrasted them beautifully with the simplicity and purity which marked the relationship of two young lovers. The film stood second in the competition.
“Pie in the sky”, “chlorophyll” brought out the hazards that young people have to pass through which distorts their thinking and brings them upon complicated situations. “The white companion” addressed communal disharmony which is responsible for distorting the peace of the nation. “The bench” was the story of a disabled girl caught in an unkind world. The film “bordabhai” was slightly different, bringing up the subject of incest.
Director Mainak Bhowmik commented “it was a wonderful experience. Everyone has a coherent and refreshing take on the subject”. The Prize money was sponsored by Priya Entertainments and Arijit Dutta handed over the prizes to the winners.
