Kolkata: Can a schoolteacher use microphones in a classroom, if necessary? There is no law allowing the use of public address systems in a classroom. But that does not mean there is a bar on the use of microphones, says Calcutta High Court.
While disposing of a writ petition on Tuesday, Justice Dipankar Datta sent the plea by a teacher of a south Kolkata school to use mikes in class for consideration of the principal secretary, state school education department. The judge observed that use of a microphone is necessary for the benefit of students.
Soma Sadhukhan, an assistant teacher of Gangapuri Shiksha Sadan for Girls’ at Purba Putiary, was suffering from a throat ailment. In 2003, a doctor advised her to use a mike in class. Soma requested the school authority for it, but they even refused to allow her to join work. Soma then moved HC, which issued an interim order directing the school authority to allow her to join work and pay her the arrears from September 18, 2002 to June 24, 2004.
The school authority filed an application in the HC for vacating the order, which was refused. Soma joined work on June 24, 2004. On Tuesday, Justice Dipankar Datta also directed the school to pay Soma her arrears.
