Midday meals to be catered through PPP in Jharkhand

Updated on: Wednesday, August 10, 2011

A centralised kitchen to cater midday meals in schools in West Singhbhum district would be set up by Tata Steel and ISCON Food Relief Foundation under public private partnership(PPP), Jharkhand HRD Minister Baijnath Ram said.

''To relieve teachers and principals from monitoring midday meals and focus on teaching, the government has decided to float open tenders for centralized kitchens at various places to cater packed meals in schools,'' he told a press conference here.

The Foundation would soon cater midday meals in 383 schools in the district, he said.

The state government was giving priority to the Rastriya Madhyamik Sikhsha Pariyojana to stop student drop out in the 14-18 age group.

The Arjun Munda government had made provision for Rs 4 crore to compensate private schools admitting 25 per cent children from BPL families. It was, however, disappointed by the Centres non-approval for funds under Right to Education, the minister said.

''The Centre is not giving a penny to compensate the private schools. Therefore we have made budgetary provision to compensate such schools,'' Ram said.
