Kolkata: A 23-year-old law student has been arrested for duping a person by promising to arrange admission for his daughter to a city college.
Police suspect the accused is just a tout and a powerful racket is active in arranging admission for students in lieu of money. The accused, Rahul Dev Chowdhury, was trapped by police near Lake Gardens on Monday evening when he arrived to collect an amount from a guardian for admission.
Days before, a resident of Lake Gardens area heard about Rahul who claimed that he would arrange admission for his daughter at Sivanath Sastri College in Accountancy Honours.
When he contacted Rahul, the youth demanded Rs 15,000 for the job. Being suspicious, the guardian informed local DYFI leader Indranil Saraswati who then contacted Rahul, pretending to be another guardian.
Saraswati informed Lake police station and Arup Chowdhuri, an officer from the police station trapped Rahul posing as the father of the candidate.
Rahul demanded an advance of Rs 1000 for the deal and arrived near the Dhaka Kalibari on Monday evening to collect the money. Police caught him red handed.
The probe revealed that Rahul is a law student of a private college at Barasat and a resident of Lake Gardens. During grilling, he reportedly confessed that he had been engaged by a group who claimed that they have influential connections in some city colleges and they can ensure admission for any student whose parents agree to pay.
Police said Rahul reportedly named a woman employee of Sivanath Sastri College who was supposed to arrange the admission.
Police ruled out any political connection with the racket and zeroed in on some non-teaching staff of the college who, they suspect, run the racket.
Calcutta University vice chancellor Suranjan Das said, “We still have not received any such complaints from the college or from the police. If informed, we will ask for the details from the college.
