Engineering college files contempt plea

An engineering college, in which Union Minister M K Alagiri is a trustee, filed a contempt petition in the Madras High Court against the Registrar of the Anna University of Technology (AUT) for "willfully disobeying" the court directive to grant affiliation to the college.

A Madras High Court bench had on August 1 directed the state government to include Daya Engineering college (DEC), in which Alagiri is a trustee, in the list of colleges authorised to admit students who come for counseling, for the 2011-12 academic year.

In his petition, the office manager of DEC, S Balasubramanian, said All India Council for Technical Education had approved three colleges DEC, SSM Institute of Engineering and Technology and CR Engineering College.

The Registrar/Contemnor had facilitated the participation of the other two colleges in the counseling even before the AUT team inspected them, he claimed.

However, the Registrar was discriminating against DEC due to "trivial reasons" including location of the cafeteria, non-availability of transport and some library books and had denied permission to the institution to join the counseling, he alleged.

The High Court had on August 1 ordered the registrar to allow the college to join counseling, and now counseling was due to end on August 8, he said. But till today, AUT had not obeyed the court order, he said.

The petitioner alleged that the intention of the contemnor was not to permit the college to have admission for the 2011-12 as directed by the court. The role of the AUT was only routine, but even that role was not being performed, he said.

DEC had not been included in the counseling procedure and no code number had been given, whereas the other colleges similarly placed were admitting students, he claimed.

Hence the court should direct the AUT to affiliate the college by permitting it participate in the counseling, and also punish the Registrar for disobeying the court order, the petitioner said.
