20 IIITs to be set up on PPP basis: Govt

Twenty new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) would be established in the country on public private partnership (PPP) basis, government told the Rajya Sabha.

"As per the approved scheme, capital cost of each IIIT would be Rs 128 crore to be contributed in ratio of 50:35:15 by central government, state government and industries respectively," Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said in a written reply.

Replying to a question on opening up of new IIITs, she said, "The project is targeted to be completed in nine years from 2011-12 to 2019-20. In the first year, five to ten IIITs would be set up depending upon response of state governments and private partners."

State governments have been requested to identify industry partners who could be associated with the project, she said.

On progress made by state governments in this regard, she said none of the four proposals received from state governments is complete as the industry partners, which are essential under the scheme, have not been identified by any.

"To ensure proper and transparent implementation of schemes, government has constituted a National Steering Committee (NSC) with representatives of central government, state government and industry," said the minister.

On reviewing the functioning of Kendriya Vidyalayas, Purandeswari said that in 2002, a committee headed by J C Pant reviewed the functioning of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and several of its recommendations have already been implemented in various forms.

In 2009, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore was entrusted the work of comprehensive review of KVS and has submitted its report, she said.
