The government approved revision of a post-matric scholarship scheme for students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) whereby parental income ceiling for eligibility will be raised from Rs 44,500 to Rs one lakh per annum.
The decision to raise the income ceiling, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, will lead to an increase in the gross enrolment ratio of the OBC students at post-matric stage, a government statement said.
There would be regrouping of courses and maintenance and other allowances would also be revised, it said.
The centrally sponsored scheme is being implemented since 1998-99 to address the problem of educational backwardness of OBCs.
The scheme is an intervention of the government in order to provide financial assistance for pursuing recognised post-matriculation courses through recognised institutions in India to students belonging to OBCs.
The Finance Minister had also, in his budget speech for the year 2010, announced that with the enhancement of the budgetary provision, the Ministry would be able to revise rates of scholarship under its scheme of post matric scholarship for OBCs, the statement said.
