Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government was planning to set up an Open University to bring all distance education courses offered by four state universities, Education Minister M A Baby told the Assembly today.
The proposed university would resolve to a great extent the problems connected with holding examinations in colleges conducted by Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi, Kozhikode and Kannur universities, he said.
He was replying to a calling attention on the problmes likely to arise in the higher education sector consequent to the implementation of the 'Choice Based Semester System' (CBSS) for degree courses.
The state Higher Education Council conducted nearly 150 workshops in the last two years to provide training to teachers on the new system, he said.
Stating that government had made necessary ground work for implementing the CBSS in degree courses in colleges from this year, Baby said the reform in examination was based on the guidelines of state Higher Education Council and the Centre.
Baby said steps had been taken to appoint permanent teachers in place of guest lecturers in colleges. The reforms were carried out as per the guidelines of Centre, so it was also the responsibilty of Centre to help the state financially for implementing the reforms.
Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said the government was implementing the new system without taking proper precautions. Welcoming the new system, N Jayaraja (KC-M), who moved the calling attention, however, said government was in a hurry to implement the CBSS.
