Karnataka students and computer science: these two aspects stood out during the seat-selection process for Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (Comedk). When the counter closed on day two at NMKRV College for Women on Wednesday, computer science remained the most preferred engineering branch with 184 students picking up seats. Electronics and communication followed with 183 seats.
Mechanical engineering (179) and information science (107) are the other branches in vogue. While 75 students picked up electrical and electronics, 54 opted for telecommunication and 24 took civil engineering.
Of the first 500 students who took engineering seats through Comedk, more than half were from Karnataka. While students from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh also made it to the list of the first 500, the first rank to take a seat was from Assam (rank 25).
The number of non-Kannadigas who took Comedk's UG Entrance Test 2011 was almost thrice the number of localities. However, 86 of the first 100 rank holders from the engineering stream were from Karnataka. While 390 students appeared on day one, the second saw a better turnout of 460.
