Principals of educational institutions in south Mumbai will now get a platform to discuss their concerns, including pressure and threats during admissions, rackets, traffic woes, eve teasing, etc.
The deputy commissioner of police, zone II, has, for the first time, initiated a dialogue between schools/ college principals and the police to find solutions to the routine problems faced by institutions in his zone.
The directive has come from the office of the commissioner of police and zone-II is the first to start the meetings. The meetings will be for all educational institutions in wards A, B, C and D, which cover schools and colleges from south Mumbai to Dadar.
Representatives from more than 100 institutes from south Mumbai met at Dadoba Jagannath Trust Hall near Gamdevi police station on July 5 for the first meeting. A letter requesting attendance from principals was issued to all schools and college by senior police inspectors from their respective jurisdiction. According to T A Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College of Commerce, such an initiative has been taken for the first time. Shiware said, “The forum discussed problems faced by principals during admission season. The police will be holding such meetings every three months, which would be helpful. Colleges find it difficult to handle the touts’ menace and threats from influential people during admissions.”
Anil Kumbhare, DCP (zone II), who was the first to act on the commissioner’s instructions, said, “We were asked to meet school authorities regularly. Girl students shy away from lodging police complaints in eve-teasing cases. Pressures and threats faced during admissions go unreported. These small issues later snowball into bigger problems." If such cases are discussed at the forum and the police take necessary action at the right time, it can be prevented. "The next meeting will be held in October,” added Kumbhare.
