The first batch of the unique Goa University-accredited honour's course at Margao's Parvatibai Chowgule College graduated this year.
A small ceremony held at the college campus on Tuesday saw 120 students graduate with a regular degree while holding a specialization in a chosen subject as well.
The honour's programme, which was introduced for the first time in the last academic year, offers specialization in 17 subjects, including mass media, banking, psychology, computer science, geo-informatics and finance.
Any of these can be taken in addition to regular under-graduate level courses offered by the college.
The programme offers an in-depth study of the subject accompanied by an interface with persons in the industry concerned.
Professor E M Travasso, associate vice-principal, Chowgule College, said, "Graduating with honours in certain fields boosts ones credentials, as the student undergoes exclusive training under industry experts during two semesters, in addition to the regular curriculum."
Chowgule Education Society trustee, Umaji Chowgule, added, "There is a gap that exists between what is taught in educational institutes and what is required by employers from job applicants. Through the honour's programme we look at bridging this gap and assisting students with skills that will be valuable in their work areas."
Principal R V Gaonkar said the college intends to "further strengthen" the programme this year "in the interest of our students".
Speaking at Tuesday's function, cartoonist Alexyz told the gathering, "This innovative programme offers students an insight into various professions from finance to the travel industry to psychology. I'm thrilled to be a part of this event."
