Research with help of bioinformatics helpful

Research with the help of bioinformatics with a trans-disciplinary approach is yielding good results, noted endocrinologist G. R. Sridhar said here on Monday on the research he is conducting along with Vice-Chancellor of JNTU-Kakinada Allam Appa Rao.

Dr. Sridhar was felicitated by Prof. Appa Rao and the support team which consisted of faculty from various disciplines in the interdisciplinary programme.

Also during the programme, JNTU-K organised an interactive session with representatives of many foreign universities as part of its exercise to explore the possibility of investment and business in its Eight Districts Zone of Excellence, for the sake of 300 professional institutions located in the eight districts, from Srikakulam to Prakasam.

Dr. Sridhar said transdisciplinary approach through bioinformatics was adopted for the research into diabetes soon after the human genome project was started in early 2000. The research has established two facts that BCHE protein has direct relationship with diabetes and that there was an underlining link between the coexistence of type II diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. The research was continuing to find a medicine.

The support group consisting of faculty members from various colleges and others belonging to several branches of science, medicine, pharmacy, etc. devised new methods to solve problems and many of the papers prepared by the members were presented at several seminars and conferences. Some of them received a lot of appreciation.

Prof. Appa Rao said bioinformatics would give more good results in future. Dr. V.N. Das was also involved in the research on diabetes, he said. The Department of Science and Technology granted Rs. 5.3 crores to the research and more funds were expected in future. JNTU-K would also receive a part of the Rs. 30 crores fund allotted by the Prime Minister for the bioinformatics system.

MS programme

JNTU-K was the first institution in Asia to start a MS programme in sports science and technology, he said. JNTU-K was making many experiments and attempting a multi-pronged approach in education to make the students contribute to the country's development.

The interaction with representatives of foreign universities, who are also meeting the Chief Minister later in the month, would be beneficial to the JNTU-K, the VC felt. Some of the institutions would supply sports equipment at a low cost with differed payment to the JNTU-K affiliated colleges.
