The British Council and A S Hornby Educational Trust are organising a five-day residential training programme on ‘Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – Putting Theory into Practice’ from August 24 - 28 in Guwahati. This is designed for English teachers working with secondary-level learners in government and NGO sectors in India.

Registrations are open till  August 5. Those interested in applying can download the application form at www.britishcouncil.org/india-english-hornby

For the last 10 years, British Council has been organising Hornby ELT seminars as part of its English partnerships initiative to support English language teachers and learners. The aim of the Hornby Trust is to promote English studies, particularly the teaching of English as a foreign or second language.

Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) has been in practice in different states since the late 80s. But the NCF 2005 guidelines have taken a step forward by making CCE compulsory for assessment of students in classrooms. This highly-progressive move also requires the introduction of a speaking and listening component to CCE processes.

Because of the time consuming nature of one-to-one interviews, teachers need a range of direct assessment methods tied to textbook tasks that can be used to assess large numbers of learners (up to 80 per class) efficiently and effectively, during lesson time.

The course will be led by Marianne Tudor-Craig, (consultant and trainer in education and international development) from London, UK.

The five-day training will be interactive and practical, and will raise awareness of the teachers in:

· The theory of classroom-based continuous assessment and how to put this theory into practice
· Exploring, planning and practising how to translate classroom-based continuous assessment into their teaching
· Being able to define and plan for appropriate student-friendly methods of assessing the four core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing
· Understanding, designing and using rubrics for scoring assessments
· Identifying and planning appropriate assessment methods and tasks typically found in secondary textbooks in India
· Increasing confidence and building skills
