Condemning the police cane charge on students protesting failure of the government in making Central University Jammu functional, Peoples Revolutionary Movement (PRM) demanded immediate appointment of a local Vice-chancellor to the varsity and to make it functional.
"We demand immediate appointment of a local academician as vice-chancellor of CUJ and make it functional this year. This has been agreed by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal in a meeting held recently at New Delhi with leaders of Jammu Central University Forum (JCUF) recently," PRM President Rajinder Jamwal told reporters here.
Jamwal, a member of the team which met Sibal and officials of the Prime Minister's office (PMO) recently, appealed to people to support this demand and be prepared for a bigger movement.
"Why is CUJ grounded by State and Central Governments when all other 15 universities established with same legislation have started functioning and have completed one year," he said.
Taking strong exception to the police lathicharge on students in Jammu, the PRM termed it highhandedness of police and demanded immediate action against erring policemen.
