Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated on Monday the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through a video conference session on Monday.
The college with an intake of 36 students, including eight selected through the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) through an all-India selection process, aims at promoting horticultural cultivation and research. The college is temporarily located in the TNAU-Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute and the State government had sanctioned Rs.10 crore for buildings and other infrastructure.
Speaking after inaugurating the college, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she laid the foundation for the institute during the course of her camp in Tiruchi on June 19. She appealed to students to work hard to achieve their educational career and register an overall growth in their life.
Jayashree Muralidaran, District Collector, said that the college would be yet another milestone in Tiruchi district which was widely famous for a variety of heritage and cultural features including Srirangam. The college would help the mango, plantain and betel growers in the district in a big way and would strengthen the cause of the State government’s plan for stepping up agricultural productivity, she said.
P. Kumar, MP from Tiruchi, said that the Srirangam Assembly constituency, which returned her to power, ranked first in terms of development and growth in the State. In this context, he referred to the short span of time between laying the foundation for the college last month and its starting today.
A student G. Kavinila, hailing from a banana cultivator family in Arumbavur in neighbouring Perambalur district, termed the college as a great opportunity for her educational career. Though her ambition was to join horticultural college, she could not afford to stay in Coimbatore disitrict. “The college is being started at a time when I turned almost desperate unable to apply at Periyakulam,” she said, assuring the Chief Minister that she would work hard in the cause of green revolution.
