The Supreme Court refused to grant more time to the Centre to complete its probe against 44 deemed universities and asked it to file its recommendations on their derecognition for failing to maintain proper academic standards by August 24.
A bench of justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma turned down the government's plea of ten more weeks and directed it to file the report by August 24.
Seeking ten weeks more for filing the report, Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising pleaded voluminous documents have been placed by different universities and it would take time to prepare the report.
"Institutions have given voluminous data as a part of their responses, which are required to be scrutinized in detail by the Committee of Officers and the same is time- consuming," she said.
The court, however, refused to extend the deadline of August 24 and directed the government to place the report by that time.
The government has appointed a three-member panel which is hearing the objections raised by the 44 aggrieved universities against the Tandon committee's recommendations.
