IBM announced the IBM Centennial Grants for IIT Kharagpur and Drishtee Foundation.
These organisations were among the 11 shortlisted for the "Smarter Planet" grants around the world.
The IBM Centennial Grants are both monetary and in-kind awards up to USD 100,000 each and fund innovative projects in areas such as healthcare, energy and food safety, the company said in a statement.
Drishtee Foundation would use this grant for its "Smart Rural Aggregation Platform", which would help create "Smarter Villages" in rural India by connecting the water supply with community farmers.
IIT, Kharagpur would use the grant to help fund a 'Sensor Web For Smarter Cities' project which would develop sensor software to assist with rainfall monitoring and flood forecasting, providing flood warnings to citizens via text message and emails.
