The Maharashtra government will start 101 Marathi medium schools in areas bordering Karnataka, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said.
Altogether 88 such schools, to be managed by zilla parishads, would be started in Sangli district and 13 in other border areas, he told reporters here after a cabinet meeting.
With the border dispute being a major issue between the two states over the years, the Centre had constituted the Mahajan Commission in 1966 to resolve the issue.
The Commission had recommended exchange of several villages between the states, but rejected Maharashtra's claim over Belgaum city.
Political parties in Maharashtra have been demanding that the "disputed" Marathi-speaking areas in Karnataka be declared a Union Territory till Supreme Court decides on the issue.
