HC asks Govt to publish rankings of Engineering colleges

In an order that will help students choose an engineering college based on its academic profile, the Madras High Court has directed the Secretary of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions to "publish the academic rankings of all affiliated self financing colleges to Anna University within a week", even as the engineering admission counselling is in progress.

In his order delivered on a writ petition filed by N Ramprashanth, a student who is awaiting his turn in the ongoing engineering counselling, Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar said that "the University is bound to disclose the academic ranking of the affiliated colleges to promote the interest of students, particularly when the number of engineering colleges in the state is more than 500."

If the ranking is not disclosed, "the student will not know which college is maintaining excellence," he noted in his order.

The student in his petition had submitted that since the rankings of the self financing colleges and their academic performance has not been disclosed, the students who were taking the counselling were finding it difficult to find out which college was academically good.

Anna University is conducting engineering admissions in the state and has its Anna University of Technology campuses - two in Chennai, one each in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Tirunelveli. The counselling sessions for admissions through a single window system into various engineering colleges are in progress since Jul 1 and is expected to last till August 11.
